ABOUT THIS PIECE
This remarkable Japanese zataku (座卓) is made from exceptionally figured tamo, its natural character dominating the entire design. Rather than imposing a regular geometric shape on the wood, the maker retained its irregular outline, knots, cavities and strongly textured outer edge.
Across the broad surface, dense swirling figure surrounds darker knots and natural inclusions, creating patterns that change considerably with the light. The warm amber centre contrasts strongly with the darker, rugged perimeter, while four removable wooden legs support the table close to the floor and allow the extraordinary wood to remain the focus.
The irregular outline, knots, natural cavities and richly varied surface give the piece a particularly strong wabi-sabi character, celebrating qualities in the wood that more conventional furniture making would normally remove or conceal.
CULTURAL NOTE
Zataku (座卓) are low tables traditionally used while seated on tatami or floor cushions. During the Shōwa period, Japanese furniture makers also produced tables that made deliberate use of unusually figured and naturally shaped sections of timber, allowing the character of the wood itself to determine much of the finished form.
In pieces such as this, knots, cavities and irregular edges become central elements of the design rather than imperfections to be hidden. The resulting table combines practical furniture with a distinctly sculptural appreciation of the natural material.
