This antique Japanese hako was sourced in Japan and selected for its craftsmanship, history, and quiet presence.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This unusually large and shallow Japanese hako (箱) is constructed from hinoki, Japanese cypress, and retains the straightforward character of a traditional utilitarian object.
Its most distinctive feature is the sliding wooden lid, strengthened by raised battens and a single diagonal brace. The simple geometric construction creates a surprisingly strong visual composition across the top of the box, while also reflecting its original practical purpose.
The hinoki has darkened considerably with age, developing deep brown tones, surface variations and traces of long use. Although the precise original function of the box is unknown, its generous length and shallow proportions indicate that it was made to store or protect a particular type of object rather than serving as a general household container.
CULTURAL NOTE
Wooden boxes were an integral part of everyday life in Japan, made in many different sizes and constructions according to what they were intended to store or transport. Hinoki was particularly valued for practical wooden objects because it is lightweight, stable and naturally resistant to moisture.
Simple functional objects such as this were generally made for use rather than display. With age, however, their straightforward construction, worn surfaces and accumulated patina can give them a distinctly sculptural quality.
For this one, I think wabi-sabi is justified, but I would actually leave the term itself out. The last sentence communicates it naturally without making the catalogue repetitive.
