ABOUT THIS PIECE
This tall Japanese kazari-todana (飾り戸棚) is a practical display and storage cabinet constructed in two stacking sections. Its unusually shallow depth gives the piece generous display space without the visual weight of deeper traditional storage furniture.
Both sections are fitted with sliding glass doors and simple wooden shelves. The old glass retains subtle irregularities and variations in the surface, characteristic of earlier glass and quite different from the perfectly uniform appearance of modern industrial glass. The interior is lined with tinted paper, creating a subdued background for the objects displayed inside. Three drawers along the base provide additional enclosed storage, each finished with a simple white knob.
The keyaki and hinoki surfaces retain the marks, colour variations and wear accumulated through decades of use. Its straightforward construction and aged finish give the cabinet a quiet character while the large glazed areas make it particularly suitable for displaying ceramics, crafts or other collected objects.
CULTURAL NOTE
Kazari-todana literally refers to a cabinet or cupboard intended for display. As glass became increasingly incorporated into Japanese domestic furniture during the early 20th century, glazed cupboards provided a practical way to display and protect ceramics, tableware and other valued household objects.
Their relatively simple forms also reflect the changing Japanese interior of the Taishō and early Shōwa periods, when traditional woodworking was increasingly combined with materials and furniture forms associated with modern domestic life.
