This antique Japanese kashigata was sourced in Japan and selected for its craftsmanship, history, and quiet presence.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This old Japanese kashigata (菓子型) is a two-part wooden mould traditionally used in the making of Japanese confectionery. Carved from kashi (Japanese oak), one half contains the deeply carved fish design, while the second wooden section forms the matching back of the mould.
The fish occupies almost the entire length of the mould and is rendered with particularly careful attention to its scales, fins and head. The substantial thickness of the two wooden sections and the wear visible along their edges retain much of the character of the mould as a working craftsman's tool.
The wood has developed a warm, deep patina through age and use, with marks and subtle variations remaining visible across the surface. Originally a practical object, it now has considerable presence as an example of Japanese folk craftsmanship.
CULTURAL NOTE
Kashigata are carved wooden moulds traditionally used by Japanese confectioners to form wagashi and other sweets. Their designs drew on seasonal imagery, plants, animals and auspicious motifs, transforming a practical tool into an object requiring considerable skill from the woodcarver.
Fish were particularly appropriate celebratory motifs in Japanese food culture. Once their working life ended, many old kashigata were preserved for the quality of their carving and the patina acquired through years of use.
