Antique Japanese Black Maneki-neko Beckoning Cat Figure
Black-glazed Maneki-neko with symbol of wealth · Taishō to early Shōwa period (c. 1910–1940)
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This antique Japanese Maneki-neko presents a more unusual variation of the traditional “beckoning cat,” distinguished by its black surface and raised paw. Made in earthenware and finished with a dark glaze, the figure displays a soft patina developed over time.
The raised paw — corresponding to the cat’s right side — is traditionally associated with attracting wealth and financial good fortune. Combined with the black coloration, the figure also carries a protective dimension, historically believed to ward off negative influences.
The gesture itself reflects a specifically Japanese way of inviting someone: Originally conceived as a coin bank, the underside would have been sealed with paper, now missing — a common and expected condition.
CULTURAL NOTE
Maneki-neko, or “beckoning cats,” are among the most recognizable symbols of good fortune in Japan. Traditionally placed in homes and shops, they are believed to attract prosperity, visitors, and positive energy.
The gesture of the raised paw holds specific meaning: a left paw invites people, while a right paw is associated with wealth. Combined with the character fuku, this example embodies a broader sense of auspiciousness, blending social and material good fortune.
