This antique Japanese hanakago was sourced in Japan and selected for its craftsmanship, history, and quiet presence.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This Japanese hanakago (花籠) has an unusually architectural construction, combining strong vertical bamboo elements with finer woven sections and delicate horizontal bindings.
The tall, gently tapered body stands on four small raised feet, while the upper section is finished with tightly woven bamboo forming a rounded rim. Small looped handles at either side add another decorative detail without disturbing the strong vertical rhythm of the basket.
Different tones and textures of bamboo give the surface considerable depth, from the darker vertical strips to the warmer reddish-brown structural elements and woven rim. The basket has developed a rich patina with age while retaining the clarity of its original construction.
CULTURAL NOTE
Hanakago, literally “flower basket,” are bamboo vessels traditionally used for Japanese flower arrangements. Their forms range from deliberately rustic baskets to highly structured pieces in which different bamboo-working techniques become an important part of the design.
In a basket such as this, the contrast between strong structural elements and finer weaving creates visual interest even without flowers, while the open construction allows stems and foliage to become part of the overall composition.
