Antique Japanese Maneki-neko Lucky Cat Figure

Earthenware Maneki-neko with good fortune · Taishō to early Shōwa period (c. 1910–1940)

ABOUT THIS PIECE

This antique Japanese Maneki-neko depicts the iconic “beckoning cat,” shown seated with one paw raised in a gesture of invitation and good fortune. Made in earthenware and finished with hand-painted details, the figure presents a soft, gently worn surface that reflects its age.

The coin on its chest bears the character fuku (good fortune), reinforcing its symbolic role as a bringer of luck and positive energy. The raised paw is traditionally associated with attracting visitors and customers, suggesting a welcoming function often linked to shops or places of exchange. Originally conceived as a coin bank, the underside would have been sealed with paper, now missing — a common and expected condition, as these figures were frequently opened to retrieve their contents.

CULTURAL NOTE

Maneki-neko, or “beckoning cats,” are among the most recognizable symbols of good fortune in Japan. Traditionally placed in homes and shops, they are believed to attract prosperity, visitors, and positive energy.

The gesture of the raised paw holds specific meaning: a left paw invites people, while a right paw is associated with wealth. Combined with the character fuku, this example embodies a broader sense of auspiciousness, blending social and material good fortune.
