Antique pair of Japanese Hina Ningyo
Pair of Hina Ningyō representing the Imperial couple · Taishō to early Shōwa period (c. 1910–1940)
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This antique Japanese pair of Hina Ningyō represents the Imperial couple (Dairi-bina), traditionally displayed during the Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) festival.
Each figure is carefully constructed with a harmonious balance between sculpted form and textile work. The heads are carved in wood and finished with gofun, a traditional coating made from finely ground oyster shell, giving them their characteristic soft white surface reminiscent of porcelain. The faces are delicately modeled with calm, composed expressions, enhancing their refined presence.
Both dolls are presented on lacquered bases adorned with metal fittings, adding structure and visual weight to the composition. Despite their relatively compact size, they convey a strong sense of dignity and refinement.
CULTURAL NOTE
Hina Ningyō are traditionally displayed during Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day, March 3rd), a celebration wishing for the health, happiness, and prosperity of young girls.
