Antique Japanese Bronze Plate
Narrative bronze plate depicting a monkey and crab · Late Edo to Early Meiji period (c. 1850s –1880s)
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This antique Japanese bronze plate presents a compact yet remarkably expressive scene of a monkey confronting a crab, rendered in finely worked relief.
The composition is full of movement: the monkey appears to grasp the crab while the crab responds in a defensive gesture, creating a sense of tension rarely found in objects of this scale. The detailing is subtle but precise, from the texture of the fur to the articulation of the crab’s legs.
The surface displays a deep, naturally developed patina, with soft tonal variations that enhance the relief and give the piece a quiet depth. The reverse is also worked, with decorative elements extending beneath the plate, reinforcing the impression of a carefully crafted object rather than a purely functional item.
CULTURAL NOTE
The subject refers to the Japanese folktale Saru Kani Gassen (The Monkey and the Crab), a story centered on conflict, cunning, and eventual justice.
