Japanese Kokeshi-Inspired Sculptural Doll – Signed

Expressive kokeshi-hand-painted landscape and calligraphy · signed · Shōwa period (c. 1960–1980)

ABOUT THIS PIECE

This unusual doll departs from traditional kokeshi forms, offering a more sculptural and expressive interpretation. Its segmented structure and contrasting wood tones create a layered composition, where each section contributes to the overall balance of the piece.

The darker central band features flowing natural patterns, while the lighter wood section is adorned with a hand-painted landscape and calligraphy, adding depth and narrative to the object. The surface shows a soft sheen, with visible grain and subtle irregularities that enhance its tactile presence.

A handwritten signature is present on the body, reinforcing its character as an individual studio-made work rather than a purely traditional folk object.

CULTURAL NOTE

During the later Shōwa period, some artisans began to reinterpret traditional kokeshi, moving beyond established regional styles toward more personal and artistic expressions.

Pieces such as this reflect that evolution, where the familiar silhouette of the kokeshi becomes a starting point for experimentation in form, material, and decoration. The result sits between folk craft and small-scale sculpture.
