Japanese Signed Kokeshi Doll – Elegant Curved Form

Hand-turned and painted kokeshi with curved silhouette · signed base · Shōwa period (c. 1930–1960)

ABOUT THIS PIECE

This elegant kokeshi doll stands out for its subtly curved body, a variation from the more traditional straight cylindrical forms. The gentle narrowing and widening of the silhouette give it a refined and almost anthropomorphic presence.

The decoration is carefully hand-painted, with balanced use of red, black, and fine linear accents. The face is rendered with restraint, conveying a calm and introspective expression typical of mid-20th century kokeshi.

The wood surface shows a soft sheen, enhanced by time and handling, revealing the natural grain beneath the painted details.

A handwritten signature is present on the base, adding an additional layer of authenticity and individuality to the piece.

CULTURAL NOTE

Kokeshi dolls originated as regional folk crafts in northern Japan, but by the Shōwa period, artisans began exploring more expressive forms and variations.

Curved silhouettes such as this reflect a shift toward more artistic interpretation, while still preserving the simplicity and balance central to kokeshi tradition.
