ABOUT THIS PIECE
This antique Japanese writing tansu combines storage and workspace within a compact and well-balanced vertical structure. The upper section features sliding doors concealing space for books or documents, while the lower section integrates a fold-down writing surface with drawers and internal compartments.
When opened, the central compartment reveals a practical writing area designed for correspondence, bookkeeping, or personal study. The layout reflects careful planning, allowing a complete working environment within a relatively compact footprint.
The exterior is defined by a rich keyaki (zelkova) wood grain on the front, contrasted with lighter interior woods such as kiri used for drawers and internal elements. This combination of materials, together with the decorative panel inserts, gives the piece both warmth and refinement.
CULTURAL NOTE
Writing tansu such as this one developed during the late Taishō and early Shōwa periods, as domestic interiors evolved to accommodate new forms of work and study. Combining traditional Japanese cabinetry with influences from Western writing furniture, these pieces provided a dedicated and organized workspace within the home.
