Antique Japanese Sculptural Wooden Hibachi
Hibachi with deeply carved organic form · copper-lined interior · Meiji to Taishō period (c. 1890–1920)
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This antique Japanese hibachi distinguishes itself through a striking sculptural presence, shaped in a deeply organic form that evokes naturally aged wood or eroded roots. Each side reveals a different contour, giving the piece a dynamic and almost living character that changes subtly depending on the viewing angle.
Despite its compact footprint, the piece has a solid weight and presence, reinforcing its impression of strength and permanence. The interior is fully lined with copper to safely contain ash and embers, while the upper rim is finished with a bronze fitting. A removable iron support allows for the placement of a kettle, and the hibachi is accompanied by a pair of hibashi (fire chopsticks) with bronze tips.
Balancing utility and artistry, this piece transcends its original purpose. It can still function as intended, yet stands today equally as a refined decorative object, capable of structuring a space through its form alone.
CULTURAL NOTE
Hibachi were an essential element of everyday life in Japan before modern heating, used for warmth as well as for heating water. While many examples remained purely functional, others were crafted with a stronger emphasis on material and form.
