ABOUT THIS PIECE
This substantial Japanese zataku (座卓) is made from keyaki, one of the woods traditionally prized in Japanese furniture for its strength, durability and expressive grain.
The broad rectangular top is the defining feature of the piece. Its strongly figured keyaki grain flows across the surface in irregular waves, providing the table's natural decoration without the need for elaborate carving or ornament. The simple, sturdy legs keep the emphasis on the wood itself and give the table a restrained, balanced appearance.
The surface retains the warm colour, subtle variations and traces of use developed over many decades. With its generous proportions and low profile, the table can still serve its original purpose in a Japanese-style room, while also working naturally as a large low or coffee table in a contemporary interior.
CULTURAL NOTE
Zataku literally means “sitting table” and refers to the low tables traditionally used while seated on tatami or floor cushions. They could serve a variety of everyday purposes, from meals and tea to writing, conversation and receiving guests.
Keyaki (Japanese zelkova) was particularly valued for furniture because of its combination of strength and distinctive grain. On relatively simple pieces such as this table, the character of the wood itself often provides much of the visual interest.
