Japanese Natural Wood Root HANAIRE (Flower Vase)
Natural root wood hanaire with integrated bamboo insert · Shōwa period (c. 1930–1960)
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This hanaire is carved from a naturally shaped piece of root wood, where the irregular form has been preserved and subtly refined to create a sculptural presence. The flowing lines and textured surface reveal the original growth of the wood, giving the piece a strong organic character.
A small bamboo tube is discreetly inserted within the form, allowing it to function as a flower container while remaining visually understated. The composition balances raw natural expression with quiet intention, transforming a fragment of wood into a refined decorative object.
CULTURAL NOTE
In Japanese aesthetics, natural materials are often appreciated for their irregularities and expressive forms. Objects like this hanaire reflect a sensitivity to nature, where the role of the craftsman is not to impose form, but to reveal what is already present.
During the Shōwa period, such pieces were commonly used in informal ikebana settings, where asymmetry and spontaneity were valued over strict formal arrangements. Root wood hanaire embody this approach, bridging utility and artistic expression.
