Vintage Japanese Kokeshi Doll – Izu “Dancing Girl” Motif
Decorative kokeshi with illustrated “Izu no Odoriko” scene · Shōwa period (c. 1960–1980)
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This vintage kokeshi features a detailed illustrated scene inspired by Izu no Odoriko (“The Dancing Girl of Izu”), a well-known literary work set in the Izu Peninsula. The composition depicts a figure in traditional attire alongside a stylized landscape, evoking the atmosphere of travel and memory.
Unlike more traditional kokeshi, this piece was created as a souvenir, capturing both place and narrative. Its warm wood tone and gently aged surface enhance its nostalgic character, making it a charming representation of mid-20th century Japanese travel culture.
CULTURAL NOTE
During the Shōwa period, kokeshi production expanded beyond regional craft traditions to include souvenir pieces tied to specific locations. These often featured famous sites, literary references, or scenic views, allowing visitors to bring home a symbolic memory of their journey.
The reference to Izu no Odoriko, a story by Nobel Prize-winning author Kawabata Yasunari, reflects the cultural significance of the region and its association with travel and introspection.
