Vintage Japanese Kokeshi Doll – Naruko Tradition (Miyagi)

Traditional Naruko kokeshi doll with hand-painted floral motifs · Shōwa period (c. 1960–1980)

ABOUT THIS PIECE

This vintage kokeshi doll represents the classic Naruko tradition from the Tōhoku region, one of the oldest and most recognizable styles of Japanese kokeshi. Its balanced proportions, softly rounded head, and cylindrical body reflect the simplicity and harmony that define these traditional folk objects.

The hand-painted decoration, with its rhythmic floral motifs and warm color palette, gives the piece a gentle and approachable character. Unlike more elaborate or sculptural kokeshi, this example embodies the essence of everyday craftsmanship, where repetition and subtle variation create quiet beauty.

CULTURAL NOTE

Kokeshi dolls originated in the hot spring regions (onsen) of northern Japan during the Edo period, where they were sold as souvenirs to visitors. The Naruko school, from Miyagi Prefecture, is among the most prominent, known for its elegant shapes and sometimes movable heads that produce a soft sound.

These dolls were traditionally associated with protection, good fortune, and childhood, and over time became a symbol of Japanese folk art.
