This antique Japanese kazari-dana was sourced in Japan and selected for its craftsmanship, history, and quiet presence.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This compact kazari-dana (飾り棚) combines open display spaces with a drawer and enclosed storage in an elegant asymmetrical composition. Despite its relatively small size, the arrangement gives the cabinet a strong architectural presence and offers several different spaces for displaying treasured objects.
Particularly striking is the richly figured tamo wood, with its swirling grain creating a natural decorative pattern across the cabinet. Tamo, kiri and keyaki are combined throughout the piece, each contributing its own colour, grain and character.
The cabinet retains the warm patina and small traces of use accumulated over many decades. Its compact proportions make it particularly easy to integrate into a contemporary interior while retaining the character of traditional Japanese furniture.
CULTURAL NOTE
Kazari-dana literally means “display shelf” or “display cabinet.” Unlike furniture intended purely for storage, these pieces combined practical compartments with open spaces for displaying ceramics, flower arrangements, incense utensils and other appreciated objects.
Their often asymmetrical construction reflects a broader Japanese appreciation for balance without strict symmetry, allowing the furniture itself to become part of the visual composition of a room.
