Taishō-era 算盤 (soroban) with wooden beads and bamboo rods, traditional Japanese calculator.
€70.00
A vintage Japanese abacus (soroban 算盤), crafted with a wooden frame and dark polished beads strung on bamboo rods. This example follows the Japanese 1:4 format, with one bead above the divider and four below, a style standardized in the Taishō era (1912–1926).
The soroban was an essential tool in Japan for merchants, students, and accountants, valued for its speed and precision even in the age of mechanical calculators. By the Taishō period, it had become both a practical instrument and a symbol of diligence and study.
This piece shows a warm patina from decades of use, adding to its character as both a functional object and a cultural artifact.
The soroban (算盤) was essential in Japan throughout the Edo and Taishō eras, serving merchants, students, and accountants for fast and reliable calculations. Even with the arrival of calculators, it remained a trusted tool and an emblem of discipline and study.
Bonus Note:
Today, soroban training still exists in Japanese schools, with competitions testing both manual skill and “anzan” (mental abacus calculation). It endures as a cultural symbol of diligence, precision, and learning.
