Vintage Japanese Bamboo Flower Basket (Hanakago 花籠)

Shōwa-era small bamboo 花籠 (hanakago) with open kagome lattice weave and loop handle.

€160.00

A charming small hanakago featuring an airy kagome (hexagonal) openwork body and a tall loop handle. Its compact size makes it ideal for intimate seasonal arrangements or as a refined accent in a tokonoma alcove. The simplicity of form and lightness of weave embody the Japanese taste for elegance in everyday objects.

Such open-weave baskets were often chosen for summer displays in tea practice, their structure suggesting coolness and the circulation of air. Despite its modest scale, this basket carries a quiet dignity and balance.

Compact hanakago were often used for seasonal wildflowers (野の花), reflecting the wabi-sabi appreciation for transience and simplicity in Japanese aesthetics. Their modest size made them suitable for everyday tokonoma displays.

Bonus Note:
The kagome (籠目) hexagonal weave seen here is not only practical but symbolic, resembling the kagome crest used in Shintō shrines as a protective charm against misfortune.
