Antique Japanese Kokeshi Doll – Taishō Era, Signed Bessho
A rare and elegant tall kokeshi with diamond motif and signed base.
€180.00
This striking kokeshi doll (こけし) stands tall with a bold presence, characterized by its large spherical head, painted topknot, and slender cylindrical body decorated with rhythmic diamond patterns. The clean, balanced proportions and careful hand-painted facial details give it a dignified yet gentle charm.
The piece is signed to the base, reading 「別所 作」 (Bessho saku, “Made by Bessho”), alongside 「学山」 (Gakuzan), which may indicate a workshop or regional style. Signed examples from this period are highly sought after by collectors for their authenticity and provenance.
Its form and decoration suggest origins in the Taishō era (c. 1912–1926), a transitional period when traditional kokeshi began to evolve stylistically and acquire stronger artistic identity. This makes it an especially appealing piece for collectors of early kokeshi art.
Kokeshi originated in northern Japan (Tōhoku region) as simple wooden dolls sold to visitors at hot spring towns. Over time, they evolved from children’s toys to highly collectible folk art, admired for their balance of simplicity and personality. The diamond motif seen here may symbolize protection and continuity, reflecting the traditional beliefs attached to these dolls.
Bonus Note: Taller kokeshi like this one were often displayed as interior decoration rather than toys, suggesting this piece was intended as a decorative and symbolic object from the beginning.
