Kokeshi dolls originated in northern Japan (Tōhoku) during the Edo period, but by the Shōwa era they had developed into new artistic styles such as sōsaku kokeshi. Unlike traditional family-line dolls, these were individually signed and explored freer forms, bridging folk craft with modern design.
