Vintage Japanese Bamboo Flower Basket (Hanakago 花籠)

This striking Japanese bamboo flower basket (hanakago 花籠) dates to the Shōwa era and is distinguished by its tall cylindrical form and finely woven vertical-strip body. The rim and base are finished in lacquered bamboo, giving stability and refinement.

What makes this piece unique are the applied fish ornaments (tai 鯛) on the shoulders. The sea bream (tai) is a symbol of good fortune and celebration in Japan, often associated with prosperity and festive occasions. The basket’s clean lines and decorative motifs make it equally suitable for ikebana or as a display piece.

Fish motifs have long been auspicious symbols in Japanese art, especially the sea bream, whose name “tai” echoes medetai (auspicious, joyful). Such baskets may have been intended for use in tea gatherings or celebratory displays.
