Vintage Japanese Iron Binshiki (Kettle Trivets)

This pair of antique Japanese binshiki was sourced in Japan and selected for its craftsmanship, history, and quiet presence.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This unusual pair of Japanese binshiki (瓶敷) was made to support a hot tetsubin or kettle after it had been removed from the heat, protecting the surface beneath.
Cast in iron, both pieces take the form of partially opened Japanese folding fans, with the ribs and folded paper of the fan translated into a surprisingly sculptural iron design. Small feet underneath raise the hot iron slightly above the table.
Although conceived as a pair, the two are individually decorated. One incorporates the character 和 (wa), associated with harmony and peace, while the other bears 寿 (kotobuki / ju), an auspicious character expressing longevity and congratulations. Cast inscriptions and a maker's mark are also present.
CULTURAL NOTE
Binshiki (瓶敷) are traditional Japanese trivets used beneath hot kettles, particularly tetsubin. While fundamentally practical objects, they were often given decorative forms suited to the tea room or domestic interior.
The sensu, or folding fan, is itself an auspicious form in Japan. Because a fan widens as it opens, it came to suggest expanding prosperity and good fortune.
The characters used on this pair reinforce that symbolism. 和 expresses harmony and peace, while 寿 is associated with longevity and felicitations. Their combination with the spreading fan form transforms these small everyday utensils into decorative objects carrying distinctly auspicious associations.
