This antique Japanese furo and kama was sourced in Japan and selected for its craftsmanship, history, and quiet presence.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This substantial Japanese tea ceremony set combines a cast-iron furo (風炉), or portable brazier, with its fitted kama (釜), the iron kettle used for heating water during the tea ceremony.
The furo has a rounded three-footed form with an opening at the front and large ring handles at either side. The kama sits directly above it and is fitted with its own pair of iron handles and a contrasting bronze lid. Together, the two elements create a particularly strong and balanced sculptural form.
The iron surfaces have a deeply textured dark finish, with subtle variations developed through age and use. Although originally made as functional tea utensils, the complete ensemble also has considerable presence as a decorative object associated with the traditional Japanese tea room.
CULTURAL NOTE
In chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony, the kama is used to heat the water from which tea is prepared. It can be placed on a portable furo such as this one, allowing the necessary hearth and kettle to be set up without a permanently installed fire pit.
The furo is traditionally associated with the warmer part of the tea year, while the colder months make use of the sunken hearth known as a ro. Its portable nature also made it possible to prepare tea in different settings, rather than limiting the practice to a tea room equipped with a fixed hearth.
