This charming Japanese bamboo flower basket (hanakago 花籠) is crafted in a rustic, freeform style using broad interwoven strips of bamboo. The low, open body creates a wide mouth ideal for loose floral displays, while the gently arched handle balances the design with elegance.

The basket shows a warm patina, with alternating red and dark brown hues in the bamboo strips, highlighting its handwoven construction. Such freeform hanakago were appreciated for their natural simplicity, reflecting the beauty of unrefined bamboo and spontaneous weaving.

CULTURAL NOTE

Rustic ikebana baskets like this one were especially popular in the Taishō and early Shōwa periods, often used for casual tea gatherings or everyday flower display. Their appeal lies in their balance of wabi-sabi imperfection and practical design.
