This antique Japanese hanakago was sourced in Japan and selected for its craftsmanship, history, and quiet presence.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This large hanakago (花籠) combines a loosely woven bamboo body with a striking natural vine handle. Rather than being shaped into a regular arch, the vine retains its irregular bends and twists, giving the basket a particularly sculptural and organic character.
The open weave is deliberately rustic, with bamboo strips of varying width creating an informal surface and allowing light to pass through the basket. The substantial vine rises above the body and becomes an important part of the composition, making the piece visually interesting even without flowers.
The bamboo and vine have developed warm, varied tones with age. Small irregularities and traces of use remain visible and contribute naturally to the character of the piece.
CULTURAL NOTE
Hanakago, literally “flower basket,” have long been used in Japan for flower arrangements. Bamboo baskets became particularly associated with more informal styles of flower display, where the natural qualities of the material and the relationship between flowers, vessel and surrounding space are important parts of the composition.
Unlike more formal containers, rustic hanakago often retain irregularities in the bamboo, weave or handle, allowing the natural material itself to contribute to the arrangement.
